How do you organise your day when you’re working from home?

BY:

When I first started working from home 3 years ago I resisted creating any sort of schedule.

I soon realised that organising my days would help me become more productive and keep a calm mind.

I have a basic one now that looks like this:

Morning:  Marketing/sales (promoting blog posts or products, one task directly related to income) then admin (checking stats, email, processing orders)

Mid morning:  Production (working on blog post drafts, new products for Stevie and Three, emailing people to feature in posts or working on items in my 2012 production schedule)

Afternoon: Client work

Evening: More production and complete end of day report

How do you organise your days?

Do you keep a daily or weekly structure? Any tips to share about getting everything done and staying sane? Please share your thoughts in the comments below!

P.S. Have a question you’d like answered or just want a second opinion? Tell me about it and if it’s suitable I’ll publish it for a Monday biz chat session.

    Hi Clare,
I’m interested in how you have decided to market your new business & make it distinguishable from competitors/similar products.

    Thanks,
    Catherine

  1. Loved the article on organising your day, though I think we all know when our own “peak” times are…. when we are most effective, so plan your tasks around that. For example some of us are better from 10am-midday, then make all your phone calls then and leave your admin tasks til 4pm-5pm when offices are winding down too. Personally I leave all the mundane admin tasks (that dont make me revenue) until after work hours or weekends.. in short bursts, so that it doesn’t take up all my spare time.

Slightly different to discussion but Ill always remember a quote i was once told.
    “Eat your toad first’….

It made me laugh but what it means is, if there is something that you are putting off doing always do it first. get it out of the way and than you will smile for the rest of the day.. It worked for me every time.

  2. I absolutely have to have a daily schedule – otherwise I’m all over the place! I plan my following day’s workload each evening, scheduling tasks that require more concentration (like writing) for the morning. It’s a great feeling ticking off tasks once they’re completed.

  3. Hi Clare,

I am organised by scheduling tasks in my diary. Yes, it’s paperback which sounds old fashioned but the physical act of ticking the completed tasks seems to increase momentum and motivation. To read my short, simple process read here: . It isn’t necessarily the best or ‘right’ way of getting organised but it works for me.

    Cheers, Caylie

I sometimes have to work from home (which is both good and bad – I love being able to freely schedule my day, but I do miss real people contact!), and I am definitely more of a morning person. I use the ‘Things’ app for any work projects and also Time Edition (free) which helps me keep track of how many hours I have spent on each project. I also use Wunderlist for personal errands and side projects to start building my love of photography into something more concrete. it’s often hard not to be distracted by small things that end up on a massive internet hunt for something not really related to what I am doing, but that’s part of the challenge! :)
