Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

Clare Lancaster - Wednesday, December 23, 2009

Wishing you a happy break over Christmas and a bright New Year.

I'll be taking some time to reflect on the year that's been and create a plan for next year. Also, trying some new recipes, reading by the pool and plenty of time with my family and two little nephews!

Thanks so much for your support of the new website - bring on 2010 - it's going to be a good one. I can feel it!

How Indie Designer Businesses can use Web 2.0

Clare Lancaster - Tuesday, December 22, 2009

Angela D’Alton of Leeloo has just posted a great wrap up of Web 2.0 tools for indie designer businesses.

The internet and micro business is a match made in heaven. For people willing to take that step and get up to speed with these tools - you're limited only by your imagination (and hours in the day).

Angela says...

While we have all of these amazing, and mostly free, tools available, the web is certainly the biggest supporter of independent business. Until the mainstream and retail fully catch-up on all of those young and talented creative types out there, you have to make it happen for yourself. Thankfully we live in a day and age (am I my mother?) where you can do that very simply.

Pop over now to read about setting up shop, connecting (and promoting) with social media and harnessing the power of a Web 2.0 world. Giddy up!

Twitter is a great online communications platform - we all know that right. We've seen businesses using Twitter as a platform for a competitions for the past year - most of them in an interruptive, spammy way using re-tweets and hashtags.

In this case study - email marketing providers Mail Chimp take us behind the scenes of their lastest Twitter competition.

Read part one here and part two here.

Blog Loving - December

Clare Lancaster - Thursday, December 17, 2009

Emma Isaacs has been busy - she's Chief Chick of Business Chicks; Director of the Last Thursday Club; Director of Studio Bodyfit and the President of Entrepreneurs Organisation Sydney.

Yowsers! Luckily for us she's finding time to write a blog. We love it so far - welcome to the blogosphere Em!

Why are we loving this blog? Sarah sums it up pretty well herself -

"If I had a proper resume, it would say: Sunday Life columnist and host/producer for Lifestyle YOU; host of MasterChef Australia and editor of Cosmopolitan magazine.

What it probably wouldn't tell you: I'm on a mission to find ways to make life bigger, more meaningful, nicer, smarter, heartier. This blog is all about this search."

Naomi Simson is one of Australia's online business pioneers and recent secret millionaire. A blog full of inspiration, education and personal experience - what's not to love?

The Design Files was recently listed in Times 50 best design blogs in the world and Melbourne's own Lucy Feagins is one of our favourites. Check it out.

Pleasure of Japanese Bath

Clare Lancaster - Wednesday, December 16, 2009

What's wrong with this picture?

Absolutely nothing. Here's the top 5 reasons why I love this image.

  1. The packaging - am a sucker for clean design
  2. The word "Pleasure" - who doesn't like a bit of pleasure?!
  3. Japan is one of my favourite places
  4. It's a bath oil - as the owner of an apartment sans bath, I long for the days of a good relaxing bath and yes - it is a compulsory addition to any holiday rental.
  5. Cherry blossoms smell pretty.

Now to find out where I can get my hands on some!

Bonds Christmas Email Campaign

Clare Lancaster - Tuesday, December 15, 2009

This clever little email campaign from Bonds hit my inbox last night.

Let's look at what we've got here.

  • A very simple design with a clear call to action that caters to each market
  • 9 days till Christmas
  • Solves a potential customers problem
  • The potential gift receiver will send this to someone they know will have waited till the last minute and/or doesn't know what to get them - making them prime candidates to purchase.

If you're an online retailer what 'last minute' email campaign are you going to send?

You've got an email database right? No? We'll talk next year. Yes? Good luck!

A Day in the Life of a Virtual Assistant - Kirsty Wilson

A ‘Monday’ in the Life of a Virtual Assistant - Interim Business Solutions

A guest post by owner Kirsty Wilson

Kirsty is the founder and owner of Interim Business Solutions which specialises in Virtual Assistance (VA) and Business Support to small businesses and the busy entrepreneur.

Here is a typical Monday, which is generally the busiest day of the week due to all the ‘ideas’ her business clients have thought of during the weekend and then need assistance to implement! It is also planning day for the week and time for her sensible clients to delegate.

5.40 - 6.30am

The alarm starts at an ungodly hour but not for me! However, it has been the order of the day for some years now and being the morning person I am; I jump out of bed, eager to start the new day.

The day starts with a strong cup of tea, emails, Twitter and Facebook are checked, RSS business and travel feeds are read and comments left on my Travel blog are responded to.

6.30 - 8.20am

The school lunches are made, breakfast is had &...the cat fed! (Max ensures he’s not forgotten). Some time is quickly spent to tweet my #dream #travel post for the day for my travel blog TravelTipsPlus.com which was launched back in June.

The kids are woken, breakfasted, washing machine on and we all prepare to leave for the school run.

8.20 - 9.00am

The children attend two different schools. The elder is at Secondary school, the younger still at Primary school and it’s a 40mins round trip. I usually return home via the bakery and resist the temptation to stop at the local cafe for a coffee, only to return home to hang out washing.

Coffee does sound a better option!

9.00 - 12.30pm

The morning is full of Skype calls and emails to-ing and fro-ing with client’s, to establish their projects, jobs & goals for the week.

The support provided to clients can include; general administration support, business support, personal assistance, social media setup and maintenance, and pretty much anything a PA/Office Manager would do, the only difference is that I do it from my own virtual office.

12.30 - 12.45pm

Eat lunch, if I remember to! Yes, I can be a bit naughty when it comes to looking after my health these days. I rarely fit exercise in either, other than some gardening. I’m sure this will generate some ‘tisk, tisk’ comments!

12.45 – 3.30pm

I’m not one to check my email at set intervals though out the day. I believe as a VA I need to be available to respond to client’s emails in a timely manner and so Outlook is open all day.

During the afternoon I allow some time on social media, undertake client’s work, follow up inquiries, send Engagement Letters to new clients and schedule the next day’s Travel post.

3.30 - 6.30pm

This is the ‘muddly’ after school time! When snippets of work and other aspects of running the business are squeezed in between afternoon tea with the children to hear about their school day, review notices, attend the vegetable garden, supervise homework and dinner preparation.

6.30 - 10.30pm

I try to watch the news and have some down time before continuing with the evening work session! As a business owner, it’s not always client’s work that keeps you at it ‘til the late hours but it’s the constant thinking and implementing ideas for the business and in my case, also developing my travel blog.

10.30pm

I start to wind down and time for some shut-eye!

As a small business owner for more than four years, I have learnt so much and met many wonderful people from all over. I do love what I do and it’s a great feeling to know that other businesses count on Interim Business Solutions as a resource to assist them with the growth of their business.
