The moment that everything changed for Linda McCartney was when she took that first photo of The Rolling Stones.

She was working as a receptionist for Town & Country magazine when she was sent to a press reception and was the only photographer allowed on the yacht when it was finished – where she captured this iconic image.

Linda went on to become the house photographer at the Fillmore East concert hall and started working for Rolling Stone in 1966.

She’s responsible for some of the most well known photographs of popular musicians of the time – capturing the images of people like The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin and her husband, Paul McCartney.

She photographed Eric Clapton for Rolling Stone magazine, becoming the first woman to have a photo featured on the front cover (11 May 1968).

All of these images and more are in the beautiful coffee table book, Linda McCartney: Life in Photographs. Do want.

This year has been one of the hardest and amazing years of my life. One day I’ll tell you all about it. In the meantime – sporty or classic? For some reason I’m drawn to three or four. I think. I mean – I like them all.

Which’s your favourite? Do you see your watch as an investment? What sort of watch have you got?

It’s National Stationary Day here in the UK so I thought it would be nice to highlight 6 thank you cards that have caught my eye lately.

I read somewhere that an emerging trend in online business is to take it offline. I agree 1000%. There’s nothing like receiving snail mail especially in this fast digital age.

It’s been really interesting to see how popular catalogue shopping is here in the UK too. I’ve noticed some of my favourite online shops are printing their seasonal catalogue. I was so excited to receive the Bodie and Fou catalogue in the mail.

Holding something tangible really adds another dimension to the customer experience – especially for those businesses that don’t have a physical presence.

I think sending a thank you card to your best customers, valued partners and anyone else who has helped you on your path would go down a treat.

Do you send thank you cards? Do you love getting things in the mail too?

Shop the cards

I think I’ve been promising this post for a few weeks now – a little update on what I’ve been doing lately!

I don’t often get too personal here but thought you might be interested (?) so here goes.

For the last 6 months I’ve been working with a large retailmenot.com type online business here in London.

They work with big brands like The Body Shop and Marks and Spencers and are one of the biggest UK businesses of their kind (with 6 million+ subscribers).

When I first got here I met up with the CEO for a catch-up – he’s a friend I worked with in Brisbane for another large online business and more importantly a good egg.

He wanted to start an ecommerce addition to the company and asked me if I’d be interested in helping to get it off the ground.

To be honest, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to keep building my own online business or jump into the tech scene here – after all, I’d started this European adventure with the purpose of living and working from anywhere and wanted to travel as much as possible.

On the other hand, when would I have this opportunity again? I was over working from home, had been craving working with people again and I do love me a bit of tech.

I started off with a couple of days a week – allowing me time to work with my freelance clients and on my side projects.

As life goes in start-ups – the work load quickly became massive and I’ve been working my little heart out trying to build momentum, processes and success.

A few months ago we all moved into some swanky offices close to the tech hub in London known as Silicon Roundabout (cute non?).

It’s a buzzing business, in an exciting area and I’ve had lots of fun working on it. We’ve just started hiring in my department so the pressure has eased slightly hence a bit more action on the blog this week.

Some words for the pictures above:

1. A street sign outside my building. So many fun companies working around the area – lots of tech, online media, ecomm – a good mix of digital creative businesses.

2. My favourite Friday lunch treat from a street market up the road.

3. Love a good contrast – the tech industry is taking over the diamond/antique jewellery district.

4. One of my favourite things is to walk to Waterloo from Farringdon taking a different path each time. I love these tiny little streets.

Thanks for hanging in with me – are you liking the work/space tour, packing inspiration and supercool pioneer stories?

Patti McGee from San Diego, California, was 19 when she became the first professional female skateboarder in history.

“I had about two weeks to decide to go pro or not after winning the Woman’s Title at the US Nationals in 1965,” said Patti.

At that time, to “go pro” meant giving up competing. Patti knew she had to make a living, so she turned pro and said goodbye to competing.

She was sent around the country by Hobie Skateboards—Vita Pak demonstrating skateboards and appearing on television shows.

She appeared upside down on her skateboard doing a handstand on the cover of LIFE magazine May 14th, 1965 and was also the first woman on the cover of Skateboarder Magazine.

Patti has just been inducted into the Skateboard Hall of Fame and now runs a screen-printing business with her daugher, Hailey called First Betty – selling girls skate wear.

Sydney couple Nathan and Jayne created Blacklist Studio Prints together in 2010.

Originally trained as a primary school teacher, Jayne decided to create a children’s fashion label and discovered her passion was styling and working on the photo shoots.

She started working at SHOP 4 KIDS magazine as the Market Editor but decided to have a break after the birth of her first child. While at home she started Blacklist Prints.

The studio has just showed at Life In Style and are going from strength to strength.

From the bit of inspiration I’ve already seen I can’t wait to see what their fourth collection includes!

You can follow along with their blog here.
